BY PETE PACHAL5 HOURS AGO

It's been rumored for months, but it's finally here:Samsung has unveiled its new flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S6. But this time it's accompanied by a cooler, better-looking brother — the Galaxy S6 Edge — which features an eye-catching design with a screen that curves around both sides.

Yes, we've seen this before, sort of: The Galaxy S6 Edge borrows heavily from the Galaxy NoteEdge, which came out last fall and had a curve on just one side. But where the Note had a versatile side screen that doubled as an app launcher, news scroll and occasional ruler, the S6 version is more limited: The curves are mainly a design ornament, and there are no "panels" to swipe through.

So what good is it? Besides giving you something to brag about to your friends, the S6 Edge still has the side clock and news scroll, although you can only call them up in standby mode. You can also instantly call up a list of recent contacts with a swipe of your thumb, and if the phone is face-down, the sides of the phone will light up when someone calls you.

Hands on with the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge

Galactic cluster

The Samsung Galaxy S6 (right) is Samsung's new flagship phone. The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge (left) is a variant with curved sides.

Show As List

And, yes, also its hotness. The phone's design will definitely turn some heads, and I have to admit it looks and feels pretty sweet. I thought the curves might make videos or photos look warped, but that wasn't the case; Samsung letterboxes media ever-so-slightly in landscape mode to avoid this.

The "regular" S6 is no slouch in the design department, either. The Samsung Galaxy S6 is the most beautiful phone to ever exist in Samsung's S series — and possibly its entire smartphone lineup. Although the metal rim certainly evokes the same design language as Apple's latest iPhones, there's no question it's a great choice, and the subtle edging actually makes it grippier than the iPhone 6.

Specs and new features

Design aside, the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge reclaim the flagship crown from the Galaxy Note 4. Each has a 5.1-inch Super AMOLED display with Quad HD resolution, the same 2,560 x 1,440 resolution as the LG G3 and Google Nexus 6. It runs Android 5.0 "Lollipop." The global model packs Samsung’s latest octa-core processor, and it felt pretty nimble switching apps and surfing the web (I tried out the global version; Samsung usually uses Qualcomm chips for the U.S. models, although it hasn't said it will for the Galaxy S6).

The fingerprint scanners in Samsung’s phones have never been the most reliable, but the Galaxy S6 improves on the feature by ditching the “sliding” of your fingerprint across the button. Instead, you just press (wonder where they got that idea?).

Press the home button twice really fast, and you’ll launch the phone’s camera. Samsung worked hard to cut down the "quick draw" time — the interval between the phone being in your pocket to snapping your first photo — and it claims to have reduced it to 0.7 seconds. I couldn’t verify that exactly, but it certainly felt much faster than the Galaxy S5, which was a slowpoke in this department.

The Galaxy S6 Edge (right) doesn't use the curved sides as a secondary screen like the Galaxy Note Edge does, although a few features (like the night clock) carry over.

IMAGE: MASHABLE, ELIZABETH PIERSON

The S6 also has several high-end features you usually only find in real cameras or larger phones: The 16-megapixel imager has optical image stabilization, which can help reduce motion blur, as well as continuous autofocus, so you can track an object through the frame, keeping it in focus no matter how it moves. The continuous autofocus isn't that intuitive to engage, but it appears to work as advertised: I shot clear video of my hand, a moving wind-up car and a person moving around a crowded room, and each time the subject was kept in focus. It also has a wide aperture of f/1.9.

The front camera is 5 megapixels with an f/1.9 aperture. Both have real-time HDR shooting, which means you can select an HDR photo (which can sometimes improve exposure) afteryou take the pic.

Samsung has also built wireless charging into Galaxy S6 and the S6 Edge. Not only that, but it's compatible with both major standards: Qi and PMA, which means you'll be able to juice up your phone almost any place that provides charging stations (e.g. Starbucks, airport lounges, etc.). Previous Samsung phones needed a special back plate for wireless charging — now the phone supports it natively.

The Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge are the first Samsung phones to support the company's mobile-payments system… which hasn’t launched yet. But when it does, in the next few months, the phones will be ready. Samsung says its payment platform will support both NFC and old magnetic-stripe readers (thanks to technology it acquired from LoopPay); this means it will work with potentially many more machines than Apple Pay.

Simplified approach

Although it sounds like Samsung threw everything but the kitchen sink into the Galaxy S6, the company says it worked hard to reduce complexity. Menus (particularly the camera's) no long pepper you with too many options, and there's a simple manager tool to let you keep track of which apps are hogging RAM or draining your battery.

Simplified menus and easy-to-use tools like this smart manager help the Samsung Galaxy S6 avoid feature creep.

IMAGE: MASHABLE, ELIZABETH PIERSON

One feature that Samsung actually downgraded from the Galaxy S5 is its water resistance. Neither the S6 nor the S6 Edge is rated for dunks in the tub; I guess Samsung, like Sony, discovered people don't care that much about how waterproof their phone is.

After handling the phone for several minutes, I already like the Galaxy S6 a lot more than last year's Galaxy S5. It’s disappointing that the S6 Edge doesn’t have the same utility as the Note version, but I can understand why since the device is targeted at the mainstream. As much as I was impressed by the Note's Edge panel, it's really a geek feature.

It doesn't hurt that the S6 Edge looks fantastic. With an emphasis on simplicity, design and restraint (there are just a few new features, but they're extremely relevant), Samsung is moving in the right direction with its flagship — even if that direction was largely trailblazed by Apple.

No word on pricing of either model yet, but you can bet the S6 Edge will cost more. It takes a lot of money to look this good.

Twice a year, we either wake up an hour earlier or an hour later than expected. Don't get caught off guard this time when Daylight Savings Time begins on March 8.

When local standard time hits 2 a.m. on Sunday, clocks will turn forward one hour in the long held tradition signaling spring has arrived. Aside from Hawaii, Arizona, and all island United States territories, most of the country "springs forward" as an energy-saving measure that dates back to 1966 when the Uniform Time Act was implemented.

While parties like the California Energy Commissioncontend small amounts of saved energy add up to big savings, U.S. lawmakers aren't convinced DST benefits outweigh the costs.

Rep. Elizabeth Scott (R - WA) recently told a House committee that biannual time switches are lead to health problems and accidents due to a lack of sleep. Last week, Idaho House Majority Leader Mike Moyle (R-ID) introduced a bill that would eliminated the state's observance of DST because it is a "disruption to families, businesses and individuals."

Sen. Cliff Pirtle's (R- NM) proposal has DST in effect year-round. The state's Senate Public Affairs Committee voted 5-1 last Thursday to advance Pirtle's bill.

DST was first embraced during World War I when extended daylight helped conserve coal. It was continuously praised throughout the decades as a cost-saving measure, though Tufts University lecturer Michael Downing refutes the claim, saying it's a commercialized measure that's good for retail and bad for energy.

"This standardized time change was no favor to farmers, who now had an hour less of morning light to milk their cows and get their goods ready for maker, let alone for commuters or children waiting for school buses in the dark," Downing said.

Some people complain about losing sleep while others will be grateful for the extra daylight. Eight months later, they will bask in the extra slumber and be more cautious drivers when the sun sets an hour earlier. In some ways it balances out, but not because small amounts of energy are being saved.

"So today we have eight months of daylight savings and only four months of standard time," Downing said. "Can you tell me which time I the standard?"

14 seconds is all it took.

Ronda Rousey caught a quick armbar on Cat Zingano to defend her UFC bantamweight championship in the main event of UFC 184 on Saturday night.

Rousey, whom UFC President Dana White called "maybe the biggest star we've ever had" earlier this week, proved that her talent lived up to the hype once again, getting another first-round submission victory with her signature maneuver.

As noted by Yahoo's Ariel Helwani, Rousey's last three fights have lasted a combined one minute and 36 seconds. Several observers tonight took to calling her "the Mike Tyson of MMA," and that seems to fit.

After the fight was over, Rousey said suitable next opponents for her could be Bethe Correia or Holly Holm, who scored a split-decision victory over Raquel Pennington earlier on the card.

In a postfight interview, Zingano said simply, "I want to do it again. I just want to do it again."

The card had some local interest. Derrick Lewis, who fought and won at Amway Center last April, smothered Roan Potts with punches to get a second-round TKO during the prelims. Lightweight Gleison Tibau, who trains with American Top Team in Coconut Creek, lost via first-round submission to Tony Ferguson in the pay-per-view opener.

Earlier results:

Masio Fullen d. Alex Torres via split decisionValmir Lazaro d. James Krause via split decisionTim Means d. Dhiego Lima via first-round TKO (punches)Kid Yamamoto vs. Roman Salazar ended in a no-contest when Yamamoto inadvertently poked Salazar in the eye and Salazar was unable to continueRoan Carneiro d. Mark Munoz via first-round submission (choke)Jake Ellenberger d. Josh Koscheck via second-round submission (choke)Alan Jouban d. Richard Walsh via first-round TKO (punches

Just a few days after his son reported he was "getting better" following a massive heart attack, former Knicks forward Anthony Mason died Saturday morning at 48.

Mason, a defensive star who helped the Knicks reach the 1994 NBA Finals, had undergone multiple heart surgeries after suffering a heart attack during a routine exam at a New York hospital earlier this month.

A Knicks spokesperson confirmed Mason's death to ESPN.

Mason, 48, played 13 years in the NBA, averaging 10.9 points and 8.3 rebounds. He missed the 1998-99 season with a ruptured biceps while playing for the Charlotte Hornets. In 1995, he won the the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year award and was named to the All-Star Game while playing for the Miami Heat in 2001.

He played with the Knicks from 1991-96, averaging 9.9 points and 7.7 rebounds.

Mason's oldest son, Anthony Jr., played for St. John's. Another son, Antoine, plays at Auburn University after transferring from Niagara University.

It's a sad day to hear the passing of Anthony Mason. #Knicks fans please pray for his family. It's hard losing a loved one

Teaming with Patrick Ewing, Charles Oakley and John Starks, Mason helped the Knicks reach the NBA Finals, where they lost to the Houston Rockets in seven games.

Gigabit Ethernet is the top still
I got an 8 port gigabit switch about six years ago. My core2duo laptop is 5 years old, it was just shy of $2k when I got it, even though new laptops are $300, I'd still have to spend $1000-$1500 to get a suitable replacement. Speakers aren't much better, and seem like poorer build quality, even the thousand dollar speakers are disappointing compared to stuff from the 90s. xbox, ps3 and wii have been around for years now. Once the consuls switch to disk they got worse, I won't get a new one till they have them with SSD from the factory or something newer. Sure I could install my own SSD, but I shouldn't have to. Moore's law still applies, but I think were at a holding point, with millions unemployed, we need to spend this time getting everyone caught up, we are only as good as our weakest link, and right now there are many weak links that need to be strengthened. What happened to all that cool stuff we keep hearing about in popular science, wired, gizmodo, Reddit and so on. All vaporware.. in my spare time I'll be working on a web app that should help a lot of people, can't wait to have a working beta to share. I'm writing from my galaxy nexus, sorry bout the poor writing... hope to have the nexus 4 soon, it does seem like cell phones are the only thing rapidly advancing, but even that seems like those rapid advances will come to an end soon, let's hope not.

Along with my silence online, I did not speak, the whole day. much of my communication was gesture based since I don't know much ASL, I used to know the alpha bet but I've forgotten it. so I went to typing, but in support of going against SOPA I censored my writings. Most of the people understood what I was upto, since I spend most of my time at an Occupy. Many times I got someone else to explain for me.
Linkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13041669622997353836noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1910935938233457462.post-20024780271718749122012-01-18T00:26:00.001-08:002012-01-18T00:26:31.507-08:00

I will be silent from 8am-8pm 1/18/12, both online and off. However in this silence I might be found in the last free speech zone. You must Dive Deep to meet me there. #stopSOPA #stopPIPA
Linkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13041669622997353836noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1910935938233457462.post-69768173270725905242011-12-29T11:00:00.000-08:002011-12-29T11:00:26.646-08:00

Its GoDaddy Transfer day. Thousands have already transferred. I have 4 domains, but they are not registered through them, I'm about to register a new one, for an upcoming site, I've been mentioning, and hopefully its ready for alpha next month. I will not be registering with GoDaddy. I don't know if they've really dropped support of SOPA or not, but I know they supported it originally, and if that is where their mindset is, and they are leaving just because of the customers demand it then they still don't have ethics/morals that I agree with, and don't deserve my business. Looks like they've got a few sales going on to try and get more customers since they just lost 100K or so. My and your Freedom is not For Sale.
Linkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13041669622997353836noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1910935938233457462.post-5934803909640071962011-12-23T16:23:00.000-08:002011-12-23T16:23:35.722-08:00

Someone is doing the coding for me for the new back end on my site. Can't wait to go live with it. Need to work on finding other people with similar capabilities. Also I'm looking around for prebuilt scripts to include when building a site, useful pluggins like the social media sharing buttons, and open-id logins, and whatever else people think is useful. The main feature and behavior of the site is not like anything else I've seen, and definitely have not seen any open source that acts like it. Not going to say too much about it. But I am hoping to go live sometime in January.
Linkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13041669622997353836noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1910935938233457462.post-64132376436894398632011-12-15T12:33:00.000-08:002011-12-15T12:33:39.939-08:00Still busy
Getting some new hosting set up, and working on the back end to something major. Need to make sure everything is working well, also getting more active on my other twitter, and making sure I have good connections all around. Can't wait to launch this thing. Wish there was a faster way to code stuff, its fairly simple, but all the little plugins need to be figured out too, for social networking and everything. This site that I'm working on will be free to use, but if you want a little better experience it will cost a small fee, and the fee is in Bitcoins, so it should help build that community. You don't have to be a bitcoin user to appreciate the site.
Linkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13041669622997353836noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1910935938233457462.post-91227186350537677332011-12-12T00:52:00.000-08:002011-12-12T00:52:18.567-08:00Almost 2 mo since Last Post
Its been a while and I haven't posted anything. I've been busy and I need to get back to blogging some stuff. Hopefully I will have a chance to get some good posts in the next few days. I've been working with OccupyWallStreet, in a western City.

One interesting thing I've come across since my last post is http://www.feedzebirds.com/ you can pay other people to retweet you with bitcoins. I've already used it to get a message out to 10K+ people.

if you need help with bitcoins just ask me.
Linkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13041669622997353836noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1910935938233457462.post-9045257568686238202011-10-15T18:03:00.000-07:002011-10-15T18:09:47.518-07:00EveryOne is a BeggarWe are all beggars, I know, your first thought is, no I work hard, and blah blah... but as you sit there reading this you are begging, begging for informations, your still reading which means you want more info. Here it is from the guy on the street corner holding a cup out, to the Banker on Wall street we are all beggars. Its all a matter of how we beg, usually more complex begging pays out better, or when supply and demand go in the right directions. But its not always the case.

I came to this realization one day while I was at a strip club, the girls got up on stage, did they're little dance, and guys threw money at them. Later on some girl would walk around and offer a lap-dance. I've been to a few strip clubs, and each does roughly the same thing, but some have a few variations on how they run, and some of the rules. The one that made me realize that everyone is a beggar had a girl up on stage, doing her thing, but when she finished instead of going out to the changing room, she came down off the stage and walked around, pulling a little string so that everyone could put an extra dollar in. And that is when it hit me. She's begging for money.

And now it gets a little more complex. She's begging for money using her body, but theres more, Most of the time you think of beggars you think of them asking for money. Many of them (the honest ones) out on the street, don't want your money, they want opportunity, and a chance to succeed and improve themselves. And we can go back to the strip club, cause thats a more happy thought. There I am sitting, and Begging for some attention, I'm not a great looking guy, I'm not bad looking either, not that much personality either, other than a plain nice guy.

But still I want some attention and affection, I'm begging for it, To get that attention you need really good looks, takes time and money going to the gym, buying expensive clothing, spending too much time on hair and so on, and the personality is just something you either have or don't, and can somewhat work on. Thats the simple form of begging, and it doesn't really work, so method #2 good old George Washington sitting in my pocket just waiting to help me out.

All there is to begging is getting what you want and you will have to give something for what you want, you may think the guy on the street begging isn't giving anything back, but he is, the person gets the good feeling of helping someone in need, sometimes they offer information, or an interesting story, many just offer a blessing and a thanks, and thats all they can give.

More advanced beggars like scarlett johansson, are looking for larger amounts of money and attention, further attention drives more money and attention, once you get started it has a snowball affect. Posting leaked photos 2011 on SmugMug can be helpful.

Or big CEOs at Sears and Best Buy, they are begging people to work for them, it may not seem like it with the jobs numbers, but they are begging someone to take the money in for them. this is how it works, the more money they take in the bigger the beggar they are. next time you see some guy on the street and think of how a beggar is a bad person, just think of how much Begging these big CEOs are doing, its a full network of beggars, they get marketing people to beg you to come into stores, and they are begging for product suppliers to give them something better for less.

Or Places like Fox News begging for your attention, and begging for advertisers, Apple Begging for more people to use iProducts and spreading rumores about products about to be announced. Its a complex system of begging, and here I am begging for a little attention, maybe I have something worth wile to share at some point, but its one step at a time, and I am working on making my methods more advanced. Hopefully I can figure out this begging thing and do it the right way, of course I won't be exploiting people, and would be spreading the wealth to all those who help me in the game of life.

Bitcoins are a new digital currency and people are starting to beg for those. Many of the people in the major bitcoin forum have posted their address, including myself for donating some BTC, but there are some more advanced ways to beg for BTC and here is one http://www.estago.com/pay/?id=4dfc2288cff61 Its more advanced so it should work better, and it can work for you.Linkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13041669622997353836noreply@blogger.com1
